Date Night Entertainment

I need your help, ladies. I have wasted far too much time aimlessly wandering around Netflix trying to find something to order for Date Night. This doesn’t seem like it should be a difficult endeavor seeing as I have my choice of pretty much any movie ever made (well, the ones on DVD, anyway) but I got nothin’. So, will you help a gal out? Leave a comment with your favorite Date Night movie. It doesn’t have to be a romance but you just might get bonus points if it is. And you know how valuable those are.

I’ll start. My top five Date Night movies (currently) are Casino Royale, Walk the Line,
When Harry Met Sally, The Notebook and The Break-Up (for the life of me I cannot figure out why this movie was not more popular).

Mr. Beguiles’ Top Five Date Night Movies list reads ever-so-slightly differently from mine (with the exception of Casino Royale, of course) but this isn’t his blog, now is it? If I can beat him to Netflix and my movie arrives first then I’m the winner! (He likes to be sneaky and mess with the Queue but I’m watching him like fox!)

So you’ll help me?
Pretty please with a cherry on top?
Many thanks in advance!

I think The Princess Bride is the ultimate in date night flicks. It has romance, it has comedy, and it has sword fighting. What more is there?

Also, I love, love, love Pride and Prejudice (the A&E version with Colin Firth, not the new one although its OK).

    Happy hunting!

  2. Rachel B says:

NO OFEENSE BUT When my hubby and I watch the Breakup, we both sit there with our hands clenched gritting our teeth. We both see the other point of view the whole time and it makes us want to fight. I didn't know anybody liked it! I tend to think it should never have been filmed it seems like a hell-bent view of the battle of the sexes. It doesn't even have a happy ending! What do you like about it?? (seriously, I really want to know!)

  3. Cryptic Star says:

I like Ghost, Pay it Forward, Armageddon…

  4. Betty Beguiles says:

No offense taken, Rachel. We've been known to enjoy films that others didn't so much.

First, my husband and I both love Vince Vaughn. I know his humor is not for everyone but he cracks us up. There's not much he's done that I haven't enjoyed.

I also felt like it was a very insightful movie. I could relate to so many of the things Jennifer Aniston's character was feeling and expressing and I could see a little of my husband in VV's character. I felt like the scriptwriters "got" men and women and the frustrations they experience in relationships. Of course, they didn't show much of the love that hopefully overcomes the struggles. I can see how that might make the movie unappealing to some but because we find VV so funny there was enough levity for us.

As for the ending, I didn't interpret it as a sad ending at all (though they did leave it up to the viewer's imagination to some degree). I don't want to give away the ending so it's hard to elaborate but feel free to email me! :)

    Take care!

  5. Lucy says:

We both quite like The Duellists. It is (to me!) a dull film about two men in Napoleonic France who end up locked into a bizarre honour-based series of duels, but the story is quite interesting (why are they fighting? are they mad?) and the fights are spectacular – and the scenary and costumes and whole visual aspect are just delightful and absorbing, especially if you like Jane Austen or historical film.

  6. Colleen says:

A couple of our favorites are Dan in Real Life and Bottleshock. They are both funny, original movies and my husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed them.

  7. Melanie B says:

I actually was surprised to find I liked 50 First Dates. I'm not usually a Adam Sandler fan but my husband is. This one was sweet though. So it had something for everyone. He got me to watch Adam Sandler, I got a sweet romance that actually had a good message of self sacrifice at its heart.

  8. Lady Caitie in the Pretty City says:

Done and done! I have the best taste in movies. I know that sounds conceited, but it's actually just true. LOL ust kidding! :) Okay, here are some I think you would love!

    Happy Go Lucky
    Waking Ned Devine
    Hitch
    Notting Hill
    The American President
    Mr. Holland's Opus
    Man of the Year
    500 Days of Summer
    Michael Clayton
    The Thomas Crown Affair
    21

Just a couple for ya! :)

  9. Maurisa says:

My hubby and I both loved Moulin Rouge, The Family Man, Return to Me, Henry Poole is Here, Bella, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

We also consider Casino Royale, Terminator 2 or 3, The Matrix, and the Bourne series great date night flicks :-)

  10. Kate says:

You've got some great suggestions here! My husband and I loved Princess Bride, Waking Ned Devine, Family Man, Henry Poole is here, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, etc.

But our favorite – a movie we've watched repeatedly since we were dating and is really 'our' movie – is "How to Kill Your Neighbor's Dog" with Kenneth Branagh. It's definitely a couple's movie, very sweet in parts, very tart in parts (the main character starts out pretty unlikable), and very very funny, especially if you have a slightly twisted sense of humor.

If you get it, you have to let me know what you think of it!

  11. Lindsay says:

    You've Got Mail!

  12. Emily J. says:

Fun topic and good suggestions! Loved Waking Ned Devine. Here's a couple more: Amelie, Big Night, Shall We Dance (NOT the Richard Gere version), Becoming Jane (although anything whenever we watch anything with James McEvoy my husband gets jealous because of my gaga eyes), The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill and Came Down a Mountain, the Ocean's 11 movies . . .

  13. That Married Couple says:

I'm with Rachel B – I had no idea anyone liked The Breakup! We call it "The Divorce" because it's so painful. Both my husband and I were traumatized by it!

Looks like you have a bunch of good suggestions, and I can never think of good movies. But I definitely agree with My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The other night we had dinner with another older couple and they said that it's absolutely true, as well! She was Greek and he wasn't and he had to go through a lot of those things, even including an uncle who seriously used Windex for everything! I can't wait to watch it again after finding that out!

  14. Lindsay says:

These are some movies that I love and no one else seems ever to have seen. All of these are good date movies:

    IQ
    Oscar
    Murder on the Orient Express

If you want something more gritty in the vein of Casino Royale, Defiance was one both dh and I liked very much (and it even stars Daniel Craig).

  15. Elisa says:

Haha…crack me up…Break Up…"You always live your life…." Our 4 year old can sing that song now because my husband watch that part of the Break Up over and over again…LOL…we love Vince Vaughn.

I also like Waking Ned Divine, a lot…but my husband says…ah…it's alright.

Together, we watch a lot of heist movies or comic book movies or the Bourne movies, that kind of stuff. We love Jason Statham movies too, Transporter 1 is a good one.

I like the chick flicks like the new Pride & Prejudice and Notebook, but my hubby doesn't like those too much, so for date night, we watch stuff we both like =)

  16. fumblingtowardgrace says:

His Girl Friday or the Philadelphia Story are one's we've watched — also Return to Me, or Marley and Me.

    Happy Date Night!

  17. the Fish says:

    The Quiet Man

    John Wayne
    Maureen O'Hara
    Ireland

A visually beautiful, engrossing FUNNY movie with lovely, lovely music. My all-time favorite.

  18. Kacy says:

Frank Capra's It Happened One Night. It's one of the best movies ever: Cute romance, classy not trashy. I think you will also love the Ellie's (the female lead character) style. I can't recommend this movie highly enough!

  19. Ouiz says:

    Oooh! Movie requests!

    Return to Me
    Amelie
    Monsoon Wedding
Dr. Who (David Tennant, of course)
    Battlestar Galactica
any of the Thin Man movies

(or just about any fun movie from the 30s!)

  20. Marie says:

The Milagro Beanfield War… one of my favorites about a small New Mexican town and the quirky people in it. (there is no violence despite the name.

  21. Barbie says:

French Kiss w/Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline.

I agree w/others' recommendations of Return to Me, The Family Man, and Dan in Real Life.

  22. nicole says:

I did not like the Breakup because I felt like the characters were just shallow and selfish until it was too late. Plus, fighting makes me uncomfortable.

Get Defiance, since you both like Daniel Craig. It is not a romance, but it is very good and is a beautiful story.

  23. Margaret Mary says:

Return to me is great, as is That Thing You Do. Both are fun and romantic.

  24. Kacie says:

Have you ever seen The Story of Us? It's similar to the breakup except it ends with hope and really is beautiful.

  25. Anonymous says:

We loved The Breakup, too! I thought it was super insightful. My fiance and I agree that Fever Pitch is a great movie – he just said recently that it is the ultimate chickflick that guys can enjoy! It's cute and funny, plus it's chock full of sports for the guy.

  26. Cape Cod Kitty says:

From older movies here are two really great films:

    From the Terrace

    High Fidelity

  27. Lady Caitie in the Pretty City says:

Looks like you got some good ideas, Bets! If you go with Waking Ned Devine, I suggest people watch it the first time with subtitles. If you're not super familiar with the Irish accent, some of the jokes can fly by ya. I'm super lame tho because I grew up there and don't have an issue with the accent but I still watch it with subtitles because I love watching all movies with subtitles.. Wow.. It feels good to finally admit that! LOL

  28. Lady Caitie in the Pretty City says:

PS – I loved "The Break Up" as well AND I totally agree – "The Story of Us" is like "The Break Up's" more serious older sister! Check it out!

  29. Paul and Annie says:

Many favorites have been listed already (LOVE Waking Ned Divine!), but I figured I'd add my two cents:

    Fools Rush In
    I.Q.
    Count of Monte Cristo
Original Cheaper by the Dozen and its sequel Bells on Their Toes
    National Treasure
    Sahara
Fools Gold (probably because we saw it during a snowstorm and wanted to be looking for treasure on the island with them!)
Yours, Mine and Ours (the original)
    With Six You Get Eggroll
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
    Raising Helen
    Groundhog Day
Hubby even enjoys watching Gilmore Girls with me from time to time!

  30. faerieeva says:

I'll second the Thomas Crown affair as a great choice for something that is both man and woman friendly. I mean.. if it is date night, I wouldn't ask him to sit through Steel Magnolia's no matter how much I like.
To my utter surprise I think the Star Wars movies are pretty good date night movies. I also liked the new Star Trek, though I am not certain if that one is out on dvd already.
I LOVED Marie Antoinette, but it takes a special guy to like it.

  31. Lisa says:

All our favorites hav been mentioned, but I'll add my endorsement for 'em… The Quiet Man and Princess Bride(all time faves, always good), Return to Me, IQ, Waking Ned Devine, The Englishman Who…, and, one not mentioned that we think is a riot:O Brother, Where Art Thou?

You'll have to let us know what you decided on!

  32. Linda says:

Return to Me is the ultimate. Even my children have watched it countless times.
Henry Poole is Here? Love it. So did Hubby.
Amelie is offensive to the average Christian woman. I couldn't sit through it.

  33. Anonymous says:

I'm pretty late to the party—maybe you can look at this short list after you have watched all the other good ones here!

Wedding Singer –Adam Sandler is pretty likable in this
Galaxy Quest — a bit of rough language and not at all romantic but my Husband and I loved it and it was the first time we laughed together in ages!
Hitch—a bit of rough language but pretty romantic and very funny

    Happy Date night! Donna

  34. Lynne says:

If you loved You've Got Mail, you'll also enjoy Sleepless in Seattle. And yes, 50 First Dates is wonderful!

  35. Lisa says:

Wayyyyy late to the party– have you seen the movie Date Night yet?? So cute and hilarious. It's one my hubby and I both loved.

It wasn't even out when you posed the question, but it's worth watching on another date night!

  36. Rae says:

I know I'm REALLY late, but I had to comment. I always thought Cinderella Man would be a perfect date night movie. Unfortunately, I haven't had opportunity to test that theory…..
