A Few Good Engagement Stories…

The early days.

The story of how Mr. Beguiles and I became engaged is short but sweet. Well, at least I think it’s sweet. ;)

My (now) husband boldly informed me that he hoped to marry me just days into our courtship. He knew, and I knew. We just knew “the way you know about a good melon.” But we also, begrudgingly, knew that it would be wise to wait just a bit before tying the knot. I was very young and we both had a variety of things that needed to be sorted out and finished up before we two could become one.

It wasn’t always easy to endure the wait, but it was necessary, and so we did with as much mildly-frustrated patience as we could muster. The waiting was made easier, of course, by the reality that we were young and in love and relatively unburdened.

At long last we found ourselves waiting on just one final thing to be resolved.

With the knowledge that on some unknown–but oh-so-soon–day Dan would finally be able to slip a ring on my finger (and knowing my love the way I do) I thought it might be wise to alert him to a little something:

“Propose how you will” I told him “but do not, I repeat, do not call me and tell me over the phone if you happen to get the all clear while I am at work.”

Take one guess what my impetuous, adorable guy did.

That’s right, girls. He actually called me at work to tell me that we could finally and at long last get married!!!

I couldn’t believe it!

But in that very same moment it dawned on me: how very, very romantic. This man loves me so much that he couldn’t even wait the few short hours until he saw me that evening to share the joyous news. What girl wouldn’t welcome that kind of love? And so I gleefully said yes, and we set the date: October 10th, 2001.

And that’s the story of how we became engaged.

Your turn!

Bring on the love, ladies!
Signed, Betty

I love your story! How sweet. And he did call you at work…for some reason I had a feeling that was coming. :)

  2. Sarah in Ottawa says:

What a sweet story! Mine is up, and our Anniversary is October 9th, 2004 — one week after my 27th b-day.

Thanks, Hallie, for hosting this. I can't wait to read all the posts!

  3. Young Mom says:

This is such a cute idea, and I think it's romantic that he couldn't wait to call you. :) I wrote my story a few months back, is it still OK to link it?

  4. Kimberlie says:

Yeah! I had my post all ready to go and I was itching to post it and link up here.

Now, is Mr. Beguiles always so good at doing exactly what you tell him not to do? If so, then tell him that under no circumstances is he to EVER, EVER, buy you whatever it is that you want him to buy you/do for you.

My husband, Paul, will very rarely take my advice about anything but then he comes back to me and says "you were right." It's worth it. I don't even tell him, "I told you so." I just wish that after 10 years of marriage, he would finally realize that I am ALMOST ALWAYS right. (like 99.99999% of the time) ;)

  5. PNG says:

That's a cute story! Thanks for hosting yet another linky party.:) BTW…our Anniversary is 11/28/98…Thanksgiving weekend!

  6. JoAnna says:

Aw, so sweet! Our anniversaries are close together — we were married on 9/1/2001.

    That is so sweet!

  8. Nicole says:

How appropriate you asked for these stories this week–Hubby and I are celebrating our four-year wedding anniversary on Thursday!

  9. Jen Ambrose says:

I actually linked to my sister's engagement story. As difficult as it is to explain, I was never engaged, so I have no proposal story. My sister's, though, tells a lot about me.

  10. myunorderedthoughts says:

Thats a nyc picture – will put up my story when its ready :-)

  11. Melanie B says:

So sweet! Gotta love those impatient, impulsive guys!

  12. Claire says:

So sweet! I love reading everyone's stories!

  13. Nicole Stallworth says:

These will be fun to read! Wonderful idea.

  14. Rebekka says:

I don't blog, but I can tell you that I got engaged over the phone too – my husband lived in Europe and I lived in California, so there wasn't that much to do about it.

  15. Kristen @ St Monica's Bridge says:

You so were not kidding with your "ditto" yesterday, but it was so nice for me to hear a story so similar to my own! God cut Jeff and Mr. Beguiles out of the same cloth for sure :).

  16. Sarah says:

Your story is super cute! I love that he couldn't even wait to see you to tell you. That picture of the two of you is precious. :)

Just put ours up. It's funny, in that I almost ruined it.

  17. amandamakingmemories says:

I actually wrote the story of my engagement back in 2007, on the two-year anniversary of when it took place. I so enjoy reading the story of how others came to be engaged – great Linky!

  18. Sarah says:

Oh my, I love your story! I always wanted that super young love story. :) And I think it's adorable that that he just couldn't wait. I posted the link I wrote just days after my husband and I got engaged last March.

  19. caffeinatedcatholicmama.com says:

I was trying to convince the Mister to write the proposal from his POV… maybe an idea for a future linky? I love the picture of you and Mr. Beguiles. Thanks for the idea and the opportunity!

  20. Sarah says:

I love this idea, Hallie! And I can't wait to read all of these wonderful real-life love stories!

P.S. Our anniversary is Oct. 27, 2001! Not too much after yours =)

  21. Jeanne G. says:

I love reading these! I posted mine, too. I like caffeinatedcatholicmama's idea of having the Mister write it from his point of view. I wonder if I can get my husband to do that.

  22. Justine says:

Such a sweet story!! :) We were young when we got engaged, too. 19 and 20!! :)

  23. gedert014 says:

  24. Elizabeth says:

Seeing as today is my anniversary, this was great! Thanks for hosting!

(Sorry, I think mine posted twice by accident!)

  25. Mandi says:

What a great idea! I was so anxious to write mine!

I had planned to tell my husband in person when I found out I was in person, but that only lasted about three minutes and I broke down and called him at work! It's so difficult to wait when you want to share the good news, so you know your husband must have been really excited to be able to marry you!

  26. faerieeva says:

What a sweet, impatient story! So wonderful how he could not wait one more moment.

  31. Mary says:

haha too funny — the first time my (now) husband and I talked on the phone, he "disobeyed" too. I said 'call me in about 2 minutes, I'm going upstairs!" and he waited about 20! on PURPOSE!!! Rude! (That is a lot less romantic than your story though…sigh. haha ;))

alright I'll write our story now!

I just recently found your blog, and am really enjoying it. Thank you!

What a beautiful story and a great idea, it is always so nice and fun to remember the time of courtship. Here is my engagement story. http://adventurousbeginnings.blogspot.com/2011/06/mr-t-and-i-our-engagement-story.html

I am happy I found your blog and htis post… (I’ll definitely be following your blog now). All of the stories are excellent, and I love how many of the proposals involved time in prayer and with teh Sacrament. Extra special. I actually found this post at just the right time, because I am participating in Nanowrimo the national novel writing month this November, and I’m writing a Christian/Catholic romance. I was worried about coming up with a good proposal for a flashback, and now I have lots of inspiraiton!
