My Bedside Table Fashion Books

“Emmy-Award winning costume designer Janie Bryant offers readers a peek into the dressing room of Mad Men, revealing the design process behind the various characters’ looks and showing every woman how to find her own leading lady style–whether it’s vintage, modern, or bohemian.” (HT: Christy)

“Join the Design Museum, the world’s leading museum in contemporary design, on a guided tour of the 50 most important dresses in social history and design.”

“The most exciting innovations in fashion are happening off the runway and recorded in the online diaries of trend-setters from around the world. The real movers and shakers in the fashion world aren’t sitting in the front rows of runway shows or presenting their collections during fashion week. They are flipping through the racks of vintage stores, plundering their parents’ closets, and scouring eBay for shoes. They are also blogging about their ideas and finds on the web-part of a complex network that is a breeding ground for ideas for the fashion industry.”

“Scott Schuman just wanted to take photographs of people on the street who looked great. His now famous blog (‘the bellwether American site that turned photo blogging into an art form’ – “New York Times”) was an attempt to showcase the wonderful and varied sartorial tastes of real people – not only those of the fashion industry. The book is a beautiful anthology of Scott’s favourite shots from around the world.”

“Christian Dior reveals the secrets of style in this charming handbook that no woman should be without. An indispensable guide that covers everything from what to wear to a wedding and how to tie a scarf to how to walk with grace, The Little Dictionary of Fashion is full of timeless tips.”

What’s on your bedside table right now? Are there any fashion must-haves I’m missing?

Happy reading, girls!

Little Star

“I think I understand!” Little Star cried out. “The baby Jesus is a king! He’s just little!”

A king is about to be born! The stars in the heavens are competing to shine the brightest to celebrate his birth. But when they see the poor family, the donkey, the shabby stable, the stars all think, That can’t possibly be a king. We’ve been fooled.

All except one. The smallest, loneliest star in the sky, Little Star, is the only one to understand what the king was about to bring to the world. But what can Little Star do for him?

Certain to become a Christmas classic, this delightful tale connects the star atop our Christmas trees to the true meaning of Christmas, the birth of Jesus, in the hearts and minds of young children.

**********

I recently received an email from the hugely gifted Anthony DeStefano (bestselling author of A Travel Guide to Heaven, Ten Prayers God Always Says Yes To, This Little Prayer of Mine, and I Just Can’t Take it Anymore!) asking whether I’d like to receive and review his newest book – Little Star. I don’t usually do book reviews (and when I do, I typically review books relating to either marriage or modesty) but I am such a fan of Mr. DeStefano’s work that I couldn’t resist making an exception (read: I couldn’t pass up the chance to get my hands on a copy of Little Star) . . .
I believe what I appreciate most about this book is the way it manages to engage the hearts and minds of children without resorting to being cloying or saccharine – as so many children’s books are. It effortlessly presents the essential message of Christmas to young ones in a way that is easy to grasp, captures one’s imagination and engages the intellect. The story is utterly enchanting and the illustrations, by the talented Mark Elliott, are absolutely beautiful. Little Star is sure to become a staple of my family’s Christmas reading library.
If you have children to buy for this season, I highly recommend picking up a copy of Little Star for them. I have no doubt you will be as charmed as I was.
